After her husband’s death, the widowed Rosaria decides to start a new life in northern Italy with her five sons. Simple and sincere, inexperienced country boys who grew up under their mother’s overbearing and fiercely loving hand find themselves in post-Second World War industrial Milan. It is a big city full of temptations that never sleeps. In dark dens, where the money earned through a hard day’s work disappears in an instant, devilish jazz plays. Crime and prostitution flourish on the streets alongside a thirst for life and the desire for happiness. Boxing is the most popular sport, promising a quick rise to fame and money. Yet people do not control their own destinies; instead, they let themselves be guided by the blinding power of love. Raised in a strictly Catholic family, the boys must choose between old and new values, putting the hidden sides of their characters, their honour and their love for their mother to the test. There are two ways out of an irresolvable situation: give up and let yourself be swallowed by eternal darkness, or emerge from it as a saint. But saints are not born without sacrifices. The production is based on the 1960 film “Rocco e i suoi fratelli” by Italian director Luchino Visconti, which won many awards.
