Kirjanduslik kohtumine: Contra
Tue 27 Oct 2026 · 16:30–18:00
Pärnu KeskraamatukoguOn October 27 at 16:30, we welcome all literature lovers to the large hall of Pärnu Central Library, where poet and translator Contra, also known as Margus Konnula, will be our guest. Contra is known as a poet whose work intertwines parody, doggerel and ingenious puns. He often performs his poetry by singing or rapping, and as a patriot of his home region of Urvaste, he also uses the Võro language extensively. Contra has written approximately 7,000 poems. In addition to poetry, he has also written children's stories and worked as a television presenter (“Elolinõ”, “Erisaade”, “Metsapeatus”) and screenwriter (“Hajameelselt abielus”, with Villu Kangur and Gert Kiiler). Contra's great passion is sport, especially running. He has completed 69 marathons and has also covered especially long distances: 333 kilometers around Old Võrumaa in seven days; in 2017, for the 150th anniversary of Latvian poet Eduards Veidenbaums's birth, he ran 170 kilometers non-stop. In recent years, Contra's work has been closely connected with Latvia. He has studied Latvian and translated Latvian literature into Estonian. Among the works he has translated and compiled are the anthology of new Latvian poetry “The Ball of Introverts”, Guntis Berelis's novel “Words Were Superfluous”, Osvalds Zebris's young adult novel “Maarja”, Zane Zusta's “Cockroaches in My Head” and several children's stories. Contra has received several awards for both his work and his promotion of cultural ties between Estonia and Latvia. Come and hear what Contra has to say about poetry, language, translation, Latvia and, of course, sport! * October 27 at 16:30 (please note: the start time is half an hour earlier than usual!) * Pärnu Central Library large hall (Akadeemia 3) * Free admission — you are simply welcome!
