Mihkli kirik
Church · Kiriku, Mihkli küla
Mihkli Church was built in the ancient parish of Soontagana as early as the 13th century, making it one of the oldest and most distinctive buildings in all of western Estonia. Mihkli Church follows the basic design of churches in the Bishopric of Saare-Lääne: a slightly narrower chancel to the east is joined to a single-nave hall with two bays. The church received its present square bell tower in the 18th century; the underground tombs beneath the church were also sealed at that time. An old cemetery lies within the churchyard wall. The famous Henry of Latvia, author of the “Chronicle of Livonia” (1180–1227), which recounts the Christianization of Estonia and Latvia and the ancient struggle for freedom, was the first priest here.
