More descriptions
Uulu Church was built in 1880 by the manor owner of Uulu (Uhla) and Surju (Surri), the Baltic German nobleman Gotthard Reinhold Staël von Holstein (1819–1892), in memory of his first wife, Eleonore Staël von Holstein (1824–1845). Built of fieldstones, the church was the Staël von Holstein family’s home church and could accommodate around 100 people. The altar painting, ‘Christ with the Child’, was painted by Hanson after Bloch. After the manors were expropriated, the church was given to Pärnu St Elizabeth’s Congregation as an auxiliary church. In 1917, the building was damaged during the Bolshevik looting. During the Soviet period, the church was used as a grain warehouse and a venue for parties. In the late 1950s, the tower was demolished and the building was converted into a gymnasium for Uulu School. One outbuilding and the former tavern have survived from Uulu Manor. Also preserved is a historic carriage road over a kilometre long, lined with acacias and oaks and known as Acacia Avenue. The church is privately owned and operates as UKI Uulu Church Culture and Holiday Village.
