Then the old man shifted in his bed, making it creak, and asked uncertainly, even a little anxiously: “Is it really you, Indrek?” Director Ingomar Vihmar: “It seems to me that when Tammsaare titled his work ‘Truth and Justice’, he did not mean it too seriously; there is a fair amount of irony in it. He sensed that people do not seek or need truth and justice, but compassion and love. In pursuing their rights and searching for truth, the characters in the work struggle with the land, God, society, themselves and one another, until by the fifth part they are all exhausted by this struggle and have no choice but to surrender. To forgive themselves and others. If those ‘others’ even exist at all. If you give up the struggle and make peace with yourself, you make peace with those ‘others’ too, and peace comes to earth! Actually, this story could have been titled ‘Forgiveness and Surrender’ or ‘Love and Compassion’ or, why not, ‘Love and Death’, but I might as well be ironic and still call the production ‘Truth and Justice’, even though it is not really about truth or justice, but rather about life and love. Is this even a contemporary story? Of course not, people today do not struggle! (That was irony.)”
