Thu 3 December at 19:00, Vanemuine Concert Hall Fri 4 December at 19:00, Pärnu Concert Hall Sat 5 December at 19:00, Estonia Concert Hall 40 Years of “Graceland” Ladysmith Black Mambazo (Republic of South Africa) Estonian Voices More than 40 years ago, American singer-songwriter Paul Simon travelled to Johannesburg after listening to a demo tape featuring vocal music unlike anything he had experienced before. Simon travelled almost in secret because he did not want to attract the attention of the apartheid regime then in power. Paul Simon’s trip began one of the most influential chapters in pop music history – the album “Graceland” (1986) and the world tour that followed, featuring all the major pop and rock stars of the time. The moment arrived when the world opened its ears to African music in a new way, recognising that the roots of contemporary rhythmic music lie there. At the heart of this movement was the vocal ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Members of Estonian Voices have always been among the ensemble’s devoted fans. Now the artists share the stage, and we can hope that something new and jointly created will emerge. Concert without an interval, lasting approximately 90 minutes.

Travelling discreetly to avoid the attention of the apartheid regime, Simon’s journey sparked one of the most influential chapters in pop history: the album "Graceland" (1986). The subsequent world tour, featuring major stars of the era, encouraged the world to hear African music anew and recognise that the roots of modern rhythmic music lay there. At the very heart of this movement was the vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The members of Estonian Voices have long been devoted admirers of the South African ensemble. Now, these artists share the stage for a collaboration that promises to bring something entirely fresh to the audience. Duration: appr. 90 min (no intermission)
