Two eras intertwine in a picturesque English country house – the early 19th century and the present day. In one, a young girl of exceptional intelligence asks her tutor questions the world is not yet ready to answer; in the other, modern scholars seek to erase blank spots from the map of literary history as they search for and decipher the treasures of the past. Steam engines and computers, dahlias and a dance party, Lord Byron and rice pudding, a monkey bite, and of course love and algebra are all somehow connected to it. Tom Stoppard’s sharply witty and moving play balances science and poetry, rationality and passion, history and the present, and brings us a story about the longing to understand the world – and the human being within it.
