Estonian National Male Choir Conductor Mikk Üleoja Programme: Tormis. “Song of the Flat Land” Pärt. “Which was the son of ...” Tormis. “Dialectical Aphorisms” Pärt. “Zwei Beter” Tormis. “Gust of Wind” Pärt. “And one of the Pharisees ...” Tormis. “Songs of Hamlet” (I and II) Pärt. “The Deer’s Cry” Tormis. “Our Shadows” Pärt. “Da pacem Domine” In 2025, the world celebrated both Arvo Pärt’s 90th birthday and the 95th anniversary of Veljo Tormis’s birth. The Estonian National Male Choir’s concert programme “Pärt & Tormis” began with an initiative by the Arvo Pärt Centre to hear the Estonian National Male Choir perform a programme dedicated specifically to the works of the two anniversary composers. But how do you put together a programme of music by two composers when one of them—Arvo Pärt—has written only one a cappella work for male choir? At the choir’s request and with the approval of the Pärt family, Kuldar Schüts and Tauno Aints created three new male choir arrangements of Arvo Pärt’s existing choral works especially for this programme. The programme was performed at numerous Estonian summer festivals during the composers’ anniversary summer and is now being presented to audiences in Tallinn and Pärnu for the first time. The programme creates unexpected thematic parallels between the two composers, who seem to come from two different worlds. One example is “Song of the Flat Land” and Arvo Pärt’s “Which Was the Son of …”. Though different at first glance, these works speak of the same thing: lineage. Tormis writes, “Here you were born on flat land,” emphasizing a sense of belonging rooted in land and nationality. Pärt, in turn, uses a liturgical text from the Catholic Church, in which during Advent all the forefathers in Jesus’s lineage are read out by name, from Adam all the way to God. The themes are similar, but the ways they are expressed are different. There are many more such intriguing dialogues in the concert programme. The concert has no interval and lasts approximately 1 hour 15 minutes

Eesti Rahvusmeeskoor Dirigent Mikk Üleoja Kavas: Tormis. „Tasase maa laul“ Pärt. „Which was the son of ...“ Tormis. „Dialektilisi aforisme“ Pärt. „Zwei Beter“ Tormis. „Tõmbtuul“ Pärt. „And one of the Pharisees ...“ Tormis. „Hamleti laulud“ (I ja II) Pärt. „The Deer's Cry“ Tormis. „Meie varjud“ Pärt. „Da pacem Domine“ 2025. aastal tähistas maailm nii Arvo Pärdi 90. sünnipäeva kui ka Veljo Tormise 95. sünniaastapäeva. Eesti Rahvusmeeskoori kontserdikava „Pärt & Tormis“ sai alguse Arvo Pärdi Keskuse initsiatiivist kuulda Eesti Rahvusmeeskoori just kahe juubilari loomingule pühendatud kavaga. Ent kuidas koostada kava kahe helilooja muusikast, kui üks neist – Arvo Pärt – on kirjutanud vaid ühe a cappella teose meeskoorile? Näiteks „Tasase maa laul“ ja Arvo Pärdi „Which Was the Son of …“. Esmapilgul erinevad, räägivad need teosed siiski samast – põlvnemisest. Tormis kirjutab: „Siin oled sündinud tasasel maal“, mis rõhutab maast ja rahvusest lähtuvat kuuluvustunnet. Pärt omakorda kasutab katoliku kiriku liturgilist teksti, kus advendiajal loetakse Jeesuse suguvõsa Aadamani ja lõpuks Jumalani välja kõik esiisad nimepidi. Teemad on sarnased, kuid esitusviis erinev. Selliseid põnevaid dialooge on kontserdikavas veelgi. Kontsert on vaheajata, kestus u 1 t 15 min
