St. Paul’s Church in Hanila is one of the most stylistically refined early Gothic sacred buildings in the Diocese of Saare-Lääne, built in the 13th century (around the 1280s). In the church’s west wall, be sure to see the staircase leading to the vaults and the Baroque pulpit and carved altar dating from 1707. Also worth seeing are the unusual grave markers preserved in the cemetery beside the church, probably dating from the early Middle Ages. Interesting fact: Hanila Church contains 18 trapezoidal gravestones bearing pagan-Christian symbols. Legend says that builders once walled a goose into the church wall, giving Hanila its name.
