Kihnu Püha Nikolai kirik
Church · Pärnu maakond, Lemsi küla
Kihnu Church, built in 1784, is one of the few Orthodox churches adapted from a Lutheran religious building. In 1846–47, almost all the people of Kihnu converted to Orthodoxy; by order of Tsar Nicholas I, the Lutheran church building was handed over to the Orthodox congregation, and an onion dome was built on the bell tower. Inside the church, you can admire a simple but beautiful iconostasis spanning the full width of the room. Interesting to know! Kihnu’s old church, actually a chapel, stood on a high sandy shore at the northern tip of the island and, according to legend, was destroyed by fire during the Great Northern War.
