Kirbla kirik

Church · Kirbla kirik, Kirbla küla

Built in the early 16th century, Kirbla Church is one of Estonia’s smallest stone churches, measuring 30 m long and 11 m wide. According to legend, people could not agree on where to build the church. In the end, the heavens themselves gave a sign: an unexpected bolt of lightning struck Kirbla Hill. The lightning had shattered a sacrificial stone the size of a sauna, and the church was built there. Interesting to know: the windows are distinctive for their uneven sizes and placement. There is one window in the north wall, the west wall has a round window, and the middle window in the south wall is narrower and taller than the others. The churchyard contains the grave of Jüri Uluots, the last prime minister of the Republic of Estonia (1918–1940), who died in Sweden in 1945.
