Virtsu vasallilinnuse varemed
Attraction · Vanalinna tn 14, Virtsu alevik
The ruins of this 15th-century castle mark the site of a former vassal stronghold that once monitored maritime traffic between the mainland and the islands.
More descriptions
The castle is first mentioned in written records only in 1465, in connection with the division of Konrad Uexküll's estate among his sons. The vassal castle belonged to the Bishopric of Ösel-Wiek. The functions of the castel-type building included controlling and securing shipping between the mainland and the island. Virtsu Castle was destroyed on 20 July 1533 during the conflict that broke out between the Bishop of Ösel-Wiek and Margrave Wilhelm of Brandenburg. The 1536 Valmiera Landtag decree prohibited the castle's reconstruction.
